Position Description: The Plant Service Worker will work under the supervision of the Auxiliaries Supervisor and the direction of the Shift Engineer. He will be responsible for the daily cleaning of various systems and equipment as assigned. Normally, his assigned areas will include the back ash and associated systems such as the grizzly scalper, incline belt take-up. This position is also responsible for sweeping and cleaning of various areas of the facility as assigned.

The duties of the Plant Service Worker include the daily cleaning and inspection of assigned rolling equipment, such as the bobcat, lift truck, and street sweeper, in accordance with the established plant operating procedures. He is responsible, when assigned, to operate the street sweeper on all facility roadways including the tipping floor.

The daily duties of the Plant Service Worker will involve working in and around ash that may present a potential exposure to lead, arsenic and cadmium. Ambient levels of these heavy metals around the Facility, while below the respective OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits, are measurable. In addition, the Plant Service Worker will be responsible for cleaning up ash deposits outside the furnace area or gas pass hoppers. This work may result in exposures to lead, arsenic and cadmium above the OSHA PELs and will, therefore, require the use of various respirators, including negative pressure half-mask and full-face respirators and the occasional use of full-face positive pressure respirators and supplied air respirators.

In performing his duties, the Plant Service Worker normally will work under the direction of the Auxiliaries Supervisor. However, during emergencies or unusual situations, the Plant Service Worker will be responsible for taking appropriate action on his own initiative to prevent equipment damage or injury to personnel.

Position Requirements: The position of Plant Service Worker requires a high school education and formal technical or utility training. A valid New York Drivers License is also required. It is expected that concurrent training for other positions will occur as time permits.
